This breakthrough revolutionized military camouflage and almost all modern armed forces use some form of pixelated camo. ERDL is basically the grandfather of all camouflage patterns in the latter half of the twentieth century, most notably for its direct descendant, the US Woodland. While most company copy simply describes their fabrics as “camo” it’s anything but a standard design and comes in all sizes, shapes, and colors. The Veil Flagship X camo pattern was inspired by the desire to understand and control the chaos of the natural world. Its abstract design is mathematically engineered and informed by the science of how both your and your game’s eyes perceive the world. This camo pattern was the first in Veil’s lineup, inspired by the desire to understand and control the chaos of the natural world. Also known as Six Color Desert, you’ll often see this patterning at military surplus stores. It became popular during the First Gulf War and was specifically created with desert environments in mind. From 1981 to 2006, this was the camo pattern used by the majority of the US military, and it’s still an incredibly popular pattern worldwide. Short for “Marine Pattern,” this was the first digital camo pattern adopted in 2001 by the US Marine Corps. And even though new camouflage designs with different approaches still enter the market, the actual dominance of Multicam and its derivatives is unbroken.

If you wear it at the wrong time of the year, your ability to blend into the background is going to be hampered. Tree bark, sticks, and actual leaves are all parts of such designs. These are fantastic for the seasons and areas for which they’re designed, and one of the best is Mossy Oak Obsession. The patterning causes you to see the colors that are most prevalent in your environment, and your brain “fills in the gaps” when looking at MultiCam. In contrast, MultiCam was designed to blend in well with virtually any environment (except for snow) regardless of terrain, lighting, or weather conditions. Unfortunately, it often gets confusing when you realize just how many versions of camo are out there.

A “cousin” of Brushstroke, it was inspired by the French Lizard design. Quickly becoming something of its own, it can be found in various jungle environments. In 1948 the US Army Engineer Research and Development Laboratory created the so called ERDL pattern, which is not only synonymous with the Vietnam War, but also influenced several other patterns. There have been pixelated patterns long before Canada started issuing pixelated uniforms in the late 1990s. Especially nowadays a magnitude of designers are creating hundreds of patterns as we speak, which most of us probably haven’t even heard of. Only during WW2 industrial printing of camouflage fabric and the manufacture of widely issued uniforms became a standard.

Rogue Territory brought the pattern back into relevance a couple years ago with a series of pants and shorts made from deadstock East German twill. Brushstroke camo was developed originally by British paratroopers in WWII, literally using large brushes to paint different swaths of colour over their khakis before jumping into enemy territory. This homebrew pattern was a favourite of British special forces through the 1960’s because each soldier could customize his kit to his surroundings. This site is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Jean F. Borsarello, Mr. Michael Powlen, and Mr Yves Debay - mentors, colleagues and friends. Their devotion to this obscure field of study is a model we may all hope to emulate.

Environmental Factors to Consider When Choosing Camo

Merge both copies by pressing Control-E, and then use the Offset filter on them. Add the Threshold adjustment layer and adjust it to create a lot of irregular splotches. Use this pencil to draw dark grey over the edges of the black splotches to make them narrower and more pixelated. Create small, round splotches this time, and fill them with black. Create a New Layer, press D, and use the Paint Bucket Tool again. Add a Layer Mask to this layer, fill the Layer mask with black, and click the chain link icon next to it.

This DIY project is perfect for those who like to hunt but hate being seen by their prey. Since that time, military organizations around the globe have invented hundreds of different camo patterns to give their troops a tactical advantage. Once you start getting into hunting brands rather than military camo patterns, you begin to find camo with more lifelike characteristics. There’s definitely a heavy influence here from the Canadian CADPAT pattern. It’s an awesome camouflage pattern that has spawned a host of other pixelated camo patterns on the market. Since this pattern can only be found on Under Armour clothing, this pattern is great if you want hunting camo with the same high-performance technology as your favorite workout gear.

How To Paint Camo Pattern

Later onwards Warsaw Pact countries used the vertical lines on solid colour, creating visual noise and being very effective against night vision devices. The design element of “rain” was initially inherent in German WW2 patterns, mimicking grass. Aerial reconnaissance made it necessary to hide installations and equipment, and because of new weapon systems (long range rifles, machine guns) it was crucial to “hide” soldiers as well. For Gala evenings, if dining in a main dining room, the line suggests a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit and tie for men and a dressy outfit, formal gown or cocktail dress for women. All vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets in rooms, as well as European-style, 220-volt outlets. Passengers can chat with friends and family on board ships even if they don't have an internet package by downloading the MSC for Me app to a smart device. Kids and teens clubs on newer MSC Cruises ships can also access cutting-edge equipment like 3D printing machines, virtual reality devices and 3D product scanning, all of which are used in activities.

The Eastern Caribbean sailings will call on Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Ocean Cay, the cruise line’s private island and marine reserve in the Bahamas. Meanwhile, the Western Caribbean voyages will visit Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Ocean Cay. We have great respect for the world’s oceans and while we sail an increasing number of guests across the globe, we continuously aim to reduce our impact on the environment per passenger. Through the use of modern technology and environmentally friendly actions, we are striving to lower the environmental impact of our cruises. From using the cleaner marine fuels, to efficiency-enhancing technology, to our advanced onboard recycling systems, we strongly believe that we have increased responsibility towards the environment.

If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination and you're bound for the top deck, that means dressing for the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to put on when you go inside) are just fine. You must be at least 21 years old to consume alcohol on sailings in the U.S. and the Caribbean. For cruises in the Caribbean, South America and South Africa, as well as on MSC Grand Voyages going to Europe and to Australia, the onboard currency is the U.S. dollar.

The line's newest ships have teppanyaki restaurants, too, and passengers on MSC Cruises' Seaside Class ships, as well as MSC Meraviglia and MSC Splendida, can dine at a Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant. Nearly every ship also has at least one — and sometimes quite a few — extra-charge venues. Among the most common across the fleet is the American-style steakhouse Butcher's Cut, which is found on more than half the line's vessels. There also are sushi bars on more than half the line's ships, with varying names like Kaito Sushi and Galaxy Sushi. On the line's recently unveiled MSC Euribia, for instance, there are nearly a dozen distinct eateries, as well as a number of bars and lounges that serve at least small bites.

Alternatively, soak in the city's vibrant nightlife scene and treat yourself to exquisite fine dining in one of Dubai's beautiful restaurants for a lavish experience. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. “We want our guests to experience MSC Cruises’ most modern and innovative ships, whether they’re on a quick weekend getaway or the vacation of a lifetime.

Solo cabins (called interior studios) measuring just 127 square feet can be found on the line's seven newest vessels. At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to being on a luxury ship, and they can be quite impressive. Together, the 14 World, Meraviglia, Seaside and Fantasia Class vessels make up MSC Cruises' big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are considerably smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at 2,700 to 3,200 passengers. Not including pulldown bunks and pullout sofas, MSC Cruises' 22 ships have 77,832 berths — about 21,000 more than Norwegian's fleet. At its current pace of growth, MSC Cruises could soon pass Carnival to become the world's second-biggest line.

Last but not least, MSC Meraviglia will be alternating between cruises to Bermuda and cruises to Florida and the Bahamas from New York, from where the ship operates year-round. For guests who want to see it all, there will also be an option to combine both itineraries to create a 14-night Eastern and Western Caribbean Cruise.

MSC Cruises Expands in the US With New 2025 Itineraries

You'll be sharing your vacation with hordes of other people, of course — as many as 6,000 on some MSC Cruises vessels. However, even the biggest MSC Cruises ships have quiet nooks where you can escape the crowds. Say, for example, the total amount of prepaid onboard services that apply to all cabin occupants before the cruise is $600. If there are four cabin occupants, the spending for the points calculation of each member will be $150, which is equal to 100 points. On most evenings, the line recommends "smart casual" dress, meaning summery dresses for women and a lightweight jacket for men. On select days, the line also holds Gala evenings on its ships where the dress code can be more formal.

Current fleet

The most basic "Bella" experience will get you fewer points than the top "MSC Yacht Club" experience. MSC Cruises adds an automatic service charge of $16 per person to final bills on sailings out of U.S. ports. Sailings with pricing in euros have a 12 euro charge ($13.13 at current exchange rates). In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of MSC Cruises ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night, including a seemingly endless array of bars, lounges and nightspots. The demographic profile of MSC Cruises ships can be markedly different depending on where the vessels are based. On Caribbean sailings out of Florida, you'll find that a large percentage of passengers are English-speaking North Americans.

Butcher's Cut with Al Fresco Dining

When pricing cabins, MSC Cruises offers one of four main "experiences," each of which comes with different inclusions and varying price tags. The basic "Bella" experience includes your room, dining in the main restaurants and buffet, and access to all the included features of the ship, such as kids programs and theater shows. On more than half of MSC Cruises' ships, many of the top suites are part of an exclusive, keycard-accessed area called the MSC Yacht Club. Billed as an upscale "ship within a ship" and aimed at luxury travelers, the MSC Yacht Club is at the very top of vessels and comes with a private lounge, a pool, sunning areas and even its own restaurant. • Our ships offer the possibility of combining 2 or 3 connecting cabins based on the ship class. In addition, take in MSC Seashore’s extensive art collection, which you’ll find located throughout the ship from landings and corridors to dedicated galleries.

MSC World Cruise

If that sounds like too many ships to get your head around, note that all 22 of the vessels in operation, as well as the three on order, fall into six distinct classes. The ships within each of the classes have similar sizes and onboard attractions. For a better experience and to continue your booking with MSC, please update your browser by downloading the latest version below. Visit the world famous Copacabana Beach on one of our South America cruises. Experience the charm of the Far East, including, Shanghai, known as "the Paris of the East". Or perhaps you want to discover parts of the world only accessible on our Grand Voyages.

MSC Aurea Bar

On cruises in other parts of the world, the onboard currency is the euro. All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a Cruise Card (or, on the newer ships, an MSC for Me wristband) that you can use to make purchases. Smoking (including electronic cigarette smoking) is allowed in a limited number of designated areas on ships, with the primary smoking area on ships being an outdoor pool area that varies by ship and is indicated by signage. Smoking is forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 fee.

Europe

As noted above, the line's biggest vessels offer multiple entertainment venues, from Broadway-style theaters to spaces for circus-like performances; all manner of deck-top attractions; large casinos; and full-service spas. In North America, MSC Cruises ships have generally sailed out of Miami, but the line recently added Port Canaveral and New York City as home ports, too. The line also offers cruises from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in a major development, the line opened its first private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, in the Bahamas in 2019. On its newest vessels, you'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless "interior" cabins that measure as little as 172 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to suites more than five times that size that sprawl across two decks.

MSC Group is also developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand called Explora Journeys. The eight smaller ships, which in general are the line's older ships, allow MSC Cruises to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of the World Class or Meraviglia Class vessels, although even the biggest MSC Cruises ships are still designed to be able to call at most ports around the world. MSC Seashore features new staterooms designed to suit all your needs during your cruise vacation. Choose among 11 different types of staterooms and suites with balconies including the coveted aft suits, 50 terraced suites with extended balconies, and 32 different suites with outdoor private whirlpools. And get to know an unparalleled accommodation experience at the two new palatial Owner’s Suites at the largest and most luxurious MSC Yacht Club.

In addition, MSC is offering savings on its newest ship, the MSC World America, which the company plans to launch next year complete with a thrilling over-water swing ride, 13 different restaurants, an 11-deck-high dry slide, and more. However, overlaid across many of the line's ships are high-end suites, upscale restaurants and luxury services — most notably the suites and amenities in the exclusive, upscale MSC Yacht Club areas found on some vessels (more on that later). Immerse yourself in white sand beaches, turquoise waters and Caribbean cuisine. Spend a full day, or two, on our exclusive private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. A journey with an MSC Cruise toward Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Sir Bani Yas will immerse you in the region's mesmerizing blend of beautiful beaches, record-breaking attractions, and experiences like no other. Uncover the vibrant tapestry of Dubai's lifestyle, and immerse yourself in the world of luxury as you discover the city's opulent malls.

Of course, it only makes sense to debut a new cruise terminal with a brand new ship. Departing every Saturday throughout the summer, the 215,863-gross ton MSC World America will alternate between 7-night, round-trip, Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean voyages. As part of its plans to expand its reach in the US, the cruise line has unveiled several new itineraries for the 2025 summer season that will be offered by MSC Seascape, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seashore, and the soon-to-be-completed MSC World America. Four MSC ships will homeport in the US in summer of 2025, including MSC World America, which will sail her inaugural season from Miami, Florida. MSC Cruises is offering monumental savings on sailings to warm weather destinations starting at less than $200 per person. You can also earn points with onboard spending and any bookings you made before embarkation.

Designed in partnership with the Lego Group, the Mini Clubs offer games, events and activities such as arts and crafts. Junior Clubs have a Masterchef at Sea Juniors competition, plus acting, dancing and singing activities. For the very youngest cruisers, there's Baby Club, a program for babies and toddlers up to the age of 3. The line partnered with baby care brand Chicco to develop dedicated Baby Club play areas on every ship with toys, games and music and rhythm activities.

As noted above, the MSC Cruises fleet includes eight of the world's 20 biggest cruise vessels — MSC World Europa, MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape. Built in the last six years, these eight ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis Class vessels (the world's biggest cruise ships), but they're right up there when it comes to amenities and passenger capacity. Add those in, and MSC Cruises operates 10 of the world's 35 biggest cruise ships, plus four somewhat smaller Fantasia Class vessels that can each hold around 4,400 passengers at maximum occupancy.

Like other megaship lines, MSC Cruises is known for big, glitzy theater productions performed in onboard theaters that are as state-of-the-art as anything you'll find on Broadway. For dinner in a main dining room, you must either have My Choice dining with the Aurea experience (a flexible dining option where you dine whenever you want) or classic dining (where you have a fixed table and time for dinner). They also have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to sprawling amusement areas with race car simulators, flight simulators and XD cinemas (more on all this below). That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. The other two Meraviglia Class ships, which date to 2019 and 2017, can carry more than 5,600 passengers with every berth filled. But it's added new ships at a rapid pace over the past six years and now operates 22 vessels, more than any other major line besides Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

MSC Cruises may be the biggest cruise line you've never heard of — assuming you're an American. Ship configuration, data and descriptions may be subject to change depending on the season and on the destination and must be verified at the time of booking. Available for guests travelling on MSC Euribia, MSC Seascape, MSC World Europa, MSC Seashore, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview. Norwegian Cruise Line canceled more sailings this week as COVID continues to spread across the country. The sick guests “experienced mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness,” Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement Sunday. "The decision not to allow the cruise ship access to the quay was taken in order to avoid any health risks," the authority said in a statement. Officials in the island nation of Mauritius blocked a Norwegian Cruise Line ship from docking there Sunday after more than a dozen passengers were stricken with a stomach illness. The South American journey on Norwegian Star begins with a transatlantic crossing from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro in November 2025, followed by a 17-day cruise calling at ports in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile.

Travelers can apply the credit toward any of Norwegian's published sailings through Dec. 31, 2025. Guests sailing aboard Norwegian Jade’s Greek Isles itinerary this summer and beginning of fall will wake up in a new destination every day with eight to nine hours of port time to explore. It will also offer two special 14-day Southern Caribbean cruises, introducing the new destinations in Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia. Concurrently, Norwegian Sky, based in La Romana, Dominican Republic, will provide a range of 7- to 12-day Southern Caribbean cruises featuring a new stop in Cabo Rojo, Dominican Republic. In conjunction with its return to service announcement, the Cruise Line today canceled all July and August itineraries aboard Norwegian Breakaway, Dawn, Escape, Getaway, Sky, Spirit, Star and Sun. In addition, voyages aboard Norwegian Epic through Sept. 1, 2021; and Norwegian Pearl through Nov. 7, 2021 have also been canceled. Today, the Company also announced its SailSAFE Global Health and Wellness Council (“the Council”) comprised of six experts at the forefront of their fields. The changes “are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas,” according to a spokesperson for the line. Bookings are open through summer 2026, with the cruise line currently offering 50% off all cruises and Free at Sea programming through December 14. Norwegian’s global itinerary expansion includes Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and South America.

The hidden enclave will feature a comprehensive wine-by-the-glass menu, and an extensive list of rare and premium vintages. The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time. Norwegian isn't the only cruise line to have canceled sailings during the ongoing COVID surge. Friday, Royal Caribbean International canceled several cruises, too, and pushed back one ship's return to service. NCL is set to offer an exciting range of Caribbean and Panama Canal cruises from late 2025 through early 2026. The Norwegian Viva will homeport in Galveston, Texas, featuring 7-day Western Caribbean itineraries to locations like Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Roatan in Honduras, and NCL’s private destination, Harvest Caye in Belize.

(April 16, 2024) -- From Thai flavors to plant-based menus, Norwegian Aqua will introduce culinary experiences that are brand new to Norwegian Cruise Line as well as redesigned venues and familiar favorites. The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE UNVEILS ALL-NEW CULINARY EXPERIENCES TO DEBUT ABOARD NORWEGIAN AQUA

Norwegian Cruise Line has a long history of bringing Broadway and the West End to its ships, and Beetlejuice is the latest on a list that includes Kinky Boots and Grease, among others. Norwegian Viva is nearly identical to fleetmate Norwegian Prima, which debuted in 2022, winning a Cruise Critic's Editors' Picks award for best new ship of the year. The announcement comes after the JaxPort board of directors approved a four year agreement with the cruise line. Norwegian Cruise Line will join Carnival as the second mainstream cruise line to sail out of Jacksonville, as Carnival Elation homeports year-round from JaxPort. In addition, the ever-popular, and nearly always sold-out, exclusive adults-only Vibe Beach Club will be expanded, taking over the existing Laser Tag arena on Deck 20. The space will boast a similar layout to the Vibe Beach Club found on Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss, with new private luxe cabanas.

But Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, told USA TODAY in June that cruise lines typically give refunds and work to accommodate guests on a different itinerary, adding that they “don't take schedule changes lightly.” They may also offer additional compensation. The changes come after the line canceled three 2025 sailings on its Norwegian Epic ship in June so the ship could undergo “a revitalization,” as the line said at the time. Norwegian also previously canceled sailings aboard Norwegian Spirit scheduled between early July and mid-September 2024 because of a full-ship charter. The line is giving impacted passengers full refunds of their fares and “a 10% discount” in the form of a future cruise credit.

The 2023-built Norwegian Vivais set to offer Southern Caribbean itineraries departing from Puerto Rico before repositioning to the Mediterranean. After debuting in 2022, the Norwegian Prima starts the year in the Caribbean with a series of cruises departing from Galveston. The vessel then repositions to North Europe for a summer program before fall programs in the Mediterranean and Bermuda. Norwegian Viva's christening festivities also included the unveiling and dedication of the Knut Kloster Hall, a newly added installation at the NCL Terminal that pays homage to the Company's founder, Knut Kloster, and colorfully shares details on NCL's 57-year history of innovation in the cruise industry. Aboard Norwegian Aqua, Whiskey Bar will relocate to deck six near the brand-new Swirl Wine Bar, while Belvedere Bar will move to deck eight at the heart of the atrium, where guests can revel in night caps and nightly entertainment. He did, however, indicate NCL could take some of the learnings it's gained from how Indulge has performed and look to bring new offerings to older ships.

Beginning April 2025, Norwegian Aqua will sail seven-day Caribbean itineraries departing from Port Canaveral, Fla., featuring calls to the tropical island destinations of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL's private island in the Bahamas. Following the ship's Caribbean season, Norwegian Aqua will offer five and seven-day voyages to Bermuda from New York City from August 2025 through October 2025 and then cruise five and seven-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami, the "Cruise Capital of the World," beginning October 2025 through April 2026. "Discovering new flavors and dining experiences is such a memorable part of any vacation, especially when you share it with those who matter most to you," said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. "Expanding on our award-winning food and beverage program, we're looking forward to bringing new concepts to life aboard Norwegian Aqua, while continuing to deliver on the variety of available offerings and value that NCL delivers."

Metropolitan, the cruise line's Sail & Sustain cocktail bar, has been moved from mid-ship to the aft of Deck 7 on Norwegian Aqua. The venue will feature a distinct new design inspired by New York City's art deco and mid-century architecture, as well as a grand piano and a small entertainment space for live music. Planterie's menu will offer plant-based dishes and other healthy options, such as the Southwest Bowl with smoked tempeh and the Mediterranean Goddess Bowl, featuring spiced vegetables, tabbouleh and honey-roasted carrots.
